The Archdiocese of Manila is preparing for a significant event on September 27, 2026, as it celebrates the 40th National Migrants’ Sunday alongside the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. On the same day, the archdiocese will also observe National Seafarers’ Sunday, honoring the dedicated men and women who serve at sea.
In a circular letter released on September 16, 2026, the Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula called on the faithful to appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of migrants and seafarers, as well as to show them love and support as they face various challenges in their lives, whether they are moving to a new place or working far from home.
“Let us continue praying for and supporting our OFWs and their families,” he said.
In this connection, the Archdiocese has released a special Prayer for Migrant Families, which will be included in the Mass after the post-Communion prayer on Migrants’ Sunday.
The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Even just one of these children.’ Chosen by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the theme focuses on the plight of minors who are on the move and emphasizes our Christian duty to welcome and support them.
Drawing from the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37), which speaks of caring for our neighbors, Pope Leo, in his message, also urges the faithful to extend a helping hand to those who are forced to leave their homes and families for various reasons. He also reminds us that even amid our struggles, we can find a ray of hope through acts of charity and solidarity with our brothers and sisters.
The Pope also highlights the inspiring actions of families who open their homes to provide warmth and safety for these children, as well as the dedicated educators and volunteers who work tirelessly in reception centers. Their commitment shows that love can triumph over indifference, and they serve as beacons of hope for many.
Additionally, the archdiocese will hold a second collection during all Masses on the evening of September 26 and throughout the day on September 27 to support the Migrants Ministry. All parishes are requested to remit the collections to the Treasury and Accounting Department at the Arzobispado de Manila by October 9, 2026.
In his message for the 40th Anniversary of Migrants’ Sunday, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) Chair Bishop Socrates Mesiona calls on the Church and the faithful to renew their commitment to migrants and refugees by welcoming, protecting, promoting their dignity, and helping integrate them into society.
“Therefore, we cannot simply relax as we celebrate this remarkable milestone in our ministry. Rather, we are called to renew our commitment to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate migrants and refugees. The Church in the Philippines must continue to stand with migrants and their families, defend their dignity, accompany them in their journeys, and work for a society marked by justice, solidarity, and fraternity,” he said.
Migrants’ Sunday is an annual Catholic observance that highlights the dignity, experiences, and struggles of migrants and refugees. It is observed alongside the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which aims to raise awareness of migration and the needs of those affected.
