Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula, D.D. reminded the faithful about the importance of mercy and forgiveness on his homily for the blessing and inauguration of the newly renovated Parish Center II of San Felipe Neri Parish, formerly known as the “Burulan” on September 12, 2026.
He reflected on the Christian call to forgiveness and mercy through the readings from Sirach, Romans, and Matthew.
The homily highlighted how society has become quick to judge, condemn, and keep track of others’ mistakes. Through the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that forgiveness should not be measured or limited. Like the servant whose enormous debt was completely forgiven by the king, we are also recipients of God’s limitless mercy.
His homily emphasized three important lessons: love does not keep count, humility must replace pride, and the cycle of anger and revenge must end. Forgiveness does not mean tolerating wrongdoing or abandoning justice. Rather, it means letting go of hatred while continuing to stand for truth and what is right.
He reminded that as followers of Christ, we are called not to mirror the anger of the world but to reflect God’s mercy. Having received forgiveness ourselves, we are invited to extend that same mercy to others.
The message concluded with a powerful reminder: “Let the anger stop in my heart. Let forgiveness begin here.”
